The demand for Linux skills in the current job market is strong. The Linux Foundation, more recently, published data regarding Linux job trends, as reported in a PCworld.com news piece. This takes into account the job postings in the Jobs Board of Linux.com from September 1 to November 30. Based on this data, the group has pointed out some recruitment trends with respect to job type, skill areas and countries. It reports that Android and Java skills are highly sought after on the hiring front, with MySQL, C++ and J2EE next on the list. A small majority of the advertised jobs, 53 percent, is aimed at Linux developers, while the rest largely consists of openings for Linux system administrators.
Linux Job Markets
According to the Linux Foundation’s study, a significant percentage of job ads for Linux professionals came from the United States. Close to 70 percent of the job board comprises Linux job opportunities based in the US. However, the PCworld.com report suggests that as the foundation is located in the US, the numbers may not be really indicative of the regions where Linux jobs exist. In second place is Australia, while the Netherlands, Canada, the UK and Germany round up the top six. Within the US too, the demand for Linux skills is not dominated by the coasts, but there is a more even distribution.
A Snapshot Of The Jobs Data
Marketing and developer programs VP at Linux Foundation Amanda McPherson said that the jobs data the group had collected was only a snapshot, as opposed to a more intensive look. She added that the data represented a few of the trends in their job space as the new year approaches. Linux Foundation also had a quick look at other popular job sites like Monster and Dice.com, and saw the same trends, with a larger number of jobs. So, it looks like the demand for Linux jobs hasn’t fallen in the present global economy, especially so in the US, where high unemployment rates continue to be a grave concern. In this regard, it would make sense for those looking at IT careers to shift their focus to in-demand skills and opt for Linux training courses.
IT Hiring Picture For 2012
Leading technology job board Dice also reported on the IT hiring picture. The outlook optimistic with more than 60 percent of the 1200 recruiting professionals surveyed saying that their clients or companies intend to hire technology professionals in 2012’s first half. About 27 percent of companies hiring were also planning to augment their IT staff by over 20 percent over the coming six months. The demand was highest for technology professionals having six to ten years of work experience in their field. This was followed by professionals who had worked in the IT industry for two to five years. In more good news, 42 percent stated that wages for new hires will also see an upward spike in 2012.
