Yammer, a social network, has been built on Scala, but is now ready to make the move to Java. Scala is a general purpose, statically typed language on the Java Virtual Machine for high performance back end services. A few clients that are using Scala include web leaders like Twitter and LinkedIn.
The reason for the move by Yammer is that Scala was not good at some tasks and noted it was a relatively young language. Typically, Scala is not written in an industrial setting and so Yammer was needing to superimpose four different levels of mental model. Yammer wrote the Scala, the Java Yammer didn’t write, the bytecode it all compiled into, and the actual problems with the language were becoming tedious for Yammer to tackle. Yammer was also having difficulty finding people with Scala experience.
Java training classes, Python, Oracle PL/SQL training, Oracle SQL training and OBIEE training are available on line by certified instructors to help develop your technical skills.
Typesafe, who developed Scala, admits that Scala has room for growth, but is still proud of it’s successes and it’s clients. The company is hard at work to improve it’s short comings, and hopes to see growth over the coming months and years.
