As an employer, you want your employees to be trained to the best of their ability for optimum productivity. Kevin Young, General Manager EMEA at Skillsoft, put together some good tips for organizations to keep in mind when planning training courses. Most often, employers leave it up to the employee to decide what type of training they would like to pursue, but this is actually not the best course of action because the employee may be looking at personal weaknesses rather than corporate goals.
The first thing to consider are your corporate goals. Think about where you would like your company to be in the next 5 years and then compare them to where you are today. Center your training courses around those goals and current company weaknesses. Technical training courses might be centered around specific project needs and include specific knowledge in Java training, Python training courses and Oracle ADF training courses.
After you have identified your corporate goals, and current deficiencies, share your vision with your employees. During employee reviews, let them know how you see their role within the company evolving and the training you feel they need to obtain this position. Training should always be practical, applicable and measurable. Employees should be fully aware of your expectations of the outcome from the training they receive it, and be able to apply it to real world practices. Letting your employees know your expectations before the training will result in higher concentration and course participation.
The next thing you want to consider is how you are going to deliver the training, either on line classes or in a classroom. On-line technical training courses are usually less expensive for the employer because it saves on time missed from work and travel expenses. However, personal attention in a classroom is more effective for some learners, so offering a choice is beneficial. The most important goal is that the employee graduates from the class with a full understanding of the course work they can apply to the work place.
Organizing your training courses around company and employee goals are also great tools for employee yearly reviews. Clear and concise goals with proper direction will keep employees motivated and productive, lower training costs and increase profits – all the ingredients needed to meet your long range corporate goals.
