Finally, Android 4 Becomes the Most Used Version of the OS
A month might seem like a very short time span, but a lot can happen in that period. In a span of just one month, significant changes have happened in the Android world. Android developers were worried about the fact that Android users were still using Gingerbread version of the OS.
But finally, Jelly Bean seems to be making progress in terms of the number of users. The 4.1 version of Android has crossed the 17% mark in the month of March, 2013, becoming the most used version of Android in terms of the number of current users.
Statistics Show the Rising Popularity of Jelly Bean
The 2.x version of Android, which included Gingerbread and the subsequent versions of Android OS till the Honeycomb version, had claimed the majority of the Android market users’ share. It had a staggering 44.2 percent of Android users. But when the numbers were recalculated in the month of March, 2013, the 4.x versions of Android had a collective users’ share of 45.1 percent.
This part of the Android pie includes Ice Cream Sandwich, Jelly Bean and the subsequent versions of Android after the version ‘4’. Although Gingerbread version 2.3.3 to 2.3.7 in itself has a 44% users’ share on its own, this is a small step that Android 4.x has taken to reclaim the users’ share from Gingerbread.
Why This Is Significant?
If you are an Android programming developer, you will know how important it is for people to upgrade from the older versions of the OS to the newer versions. It will make activities like software upgrades and app development easier.
If the market has users of all the versions, you will have to design and develop apps for the older versions too, which is not good from the development point of view. You will have to contend with the older versions which will curtail innovations and new developments.
This trend might just be the start of Android’s further development that we will come to see in the near future.
