If You Haven’t Noticed, Androids are Multiplying!
If you are an Android app developer, or are taking Android training classes to become one, this news will be music to your ears. ABI Research, a leading research firm, reported that the app market in 2013 will be dominated by Android apps significantly.
The research firm estimated that the total number of apps downloaded this year for smartphones alone will be a staggering 56 billion, a number that should serve as motivation for all app developers. But the majority of the smartphone apps will be for the Android operating system only.
Google Dominates Apple In Smartphone App Downloads
It is now a well-known fact that 9 out of every 10 apps downloaded, or 90% of all downloaded apps, are for Android or iOS devices. ABI Research estimated that 32.5 billion of the 56 billion downloaded apps will be by Android smartphone users. Apple iPhone users are estimated to download 18.5 billion apps.
This means that 58% of all smartphone apps downloaded this year will be for Android mobile operating system. Apple’s share in this pie is just 33%. With these numbers, we can conclude that 88 out of 100 apps or 88% of all smartphone apps downloaded will be from the Google Play Store exclusively.
Microsoft and BlackBerry Apps Share Insignificant
The report also shed light on the number of BlackBerry and Microsoft apps that smartphone users will download this year. Windows Phone (Microsoft) users are estimated to download 2.25 billion apps, only 4% of all smartphone apps downloaded this year. The number of BlackBerry apps downloaded this year will be 1.7 billion, which is a 3% share of the smartphone apps market. This ensures that these two manufacturers will not make any significant impact on the smartphone app market for the year of 2013 at least.
Apple Annihilates Competition in Tablet Apps Market
The tablet apps market is expected to show a different trend altogether. Out of the 14 billion apps that are expected to be downloaded in 2013 for tablets, a staggering 10.5 billion apps or 75% of the apps will be downloaded by iPad users only.
Apps for Android powered tablets will amount to only 2.4 billion, only a 17% share of the tablet apps market. It is interesting to note that ABI has not included the Kindle apps of Amazon’s in the Android tablet apps share owing to the fact that they market their apps from their own exclusive app store.
