2012 onwards Oracle has promoted the use of Bundle Patches for patching Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition – rolling out these bundle patches every thirty days. These patches are cumulative, and this means they come packed with all previous patch updates, and security alerts from Oracle.
Though this gives you freedom from the need of having applied all the previous patches before going for a new bundle patch, you still need to have the stated patch set level for your product. These cumulative patches are typically used with the product’s .0 version, and the OPatch tool administers all the patching. The OPatch tool is Oracle’s standard patching tool that monitors and manages patch applications while also maintaining a stock pile of these bundle patches.
An Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition system administrator will come across the OPtach several times a day and thus it helps to know of a shorter and faster method of quickly applying patch set updates. What is being mentioned here is the OPatch option of napply which provides a more straightforward way of applying patches when compared to the method documented in patch installation documents.
The napply option helps attain quicker patching in two smart steps. One – it applies all the patches at the same time instead of applying them one at a time as the traditional bundle patches do. Two – when used with the silent flag of the OPatch, it stops OPatch from signaling to apply the patches one after the other in the traditional fashion.
To use this napply methods of patching follow the given steps:
- Depending on the product you’re using, download all the necessary patches. You can use the checksums option for the files you download to ensure they are fully functional and don’t get corrupted in the download procedure.
- Once downloaded, unzip all the patches – the main as well as all the smaller zipped and archived patches inside the main.
- Now create a folder and move all the individual patch folders into this single folder.
- As you would traditionally do, take backups in this process too.
- Next, specify all the environment variables. Remember that the single folder you created in step 3 should be set as your “patch folder”.
- Now switch off the Oracle Process Manager, Notification server, also the admin, and the managed servers to apply all the patches at once.
- Once all the patches have been applied and you have checked them in the “OPatch lsinventory” as per the instructions available in the README.html file of the documentation, switch the OPMN, admin and managed server back on.
You can now log into your OBIEE and check for quickly and easily installed new version.
