Red Hat Enterprise Linux operating system is targeted mainly at the commercial market and is developed by Red Hat. Red Hat announced the release of a beta version of its Software Collection. Red Hat Software Collection is used to install multiple versions of software on a particular system. The standard tools package in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 is not replaced, but an additional set of tools are installed and the user can enable it.
An enterprise is successful when new technologies are readily incorporated by its developers. With Software Collection, developing and deploying web applications it becomes easier and also the developers’ efforts are backed by long-term support. Red Hat announced that Software Collection will have a lifecycle of 3 years, and it plans a series of releases for the Red Hat Software Collection. This release will provide developers with the latest runtime components to assist them in creating new features and using new capabilities of web applications for enterprise.
The beta release of Red Hat Software Collection 1.0 will enable developers to use newer versions of languages such Ruby and Python. The beta version of Software Collection includes access to stable versions of Python v2.7 and v3.3; Ruby 1.9.3 with Rail 3.2.8 which improves performance for faster loading time; Perl v5.16.3 includes enhanced security, updated modules, new debugging options; and PHP v5.4 includes reduced memory consumption, new language syntax, and improved performance.
Along with these, Software Collection will also provide access stable releases of runtime databases such as MySQL v5.5, MariaDB version 5.5, plus PostgreSQL version 9.2 which has native JSON support, and MySQL version 5.5.
Software Collection is available for those customers who have active subscriptions of Red Hat Enterprise Linux Workstation, Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server, and also subscriptions which are developer related.
