There is no doubt about the opportunities that you are likely to get if you are a Python programmer or aspiring to be one by taking Python training classes. However, in what is perceived as a big boost to the reputation of Python, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency has invested $3 million into a Texas based startup, Continuum Analytics. This company is doing something that has never been attempted before: trying to harness the computing power of Python and use it for big data requirements and its analytics.
Continuum Analytics Mission
Python as a programming language is very popular because it can be used for a wide range of applications. The general consensus in the developer community is that the full potential of Python programming language is yet to be explored. Continuum Analytics is now harnessing the computing capability of Python and using it in Big Data gathering and analytics. The company is not only developing techniques but also software that can be universally used for Big Data analytics.
Investment from DARPA XDATA Fund
Incidentally, it is not just the IT world that is interested in Big Data. DARPA had a fund of $100 million, called the XDATA fund, which was granted to the agency in 2012. This fund was exclusively for developing methods that will facilitate the analysis of data in large volumes even when it was random and unstructured. It is this fund that the DARPA has used to fund Continuum Analytics for its Python based Big Data venture.
Other Big Data Interests of DARPA
Incidentally, this is not the only Big Data venture that the DARPA has put its money on. They are also interested in Bokeh, a HTML5 based visualization library, Blaze, another Python based analytics tool that can be run in multiple environments simultaneously, and Numba, a Python code compiler that will convert Python into machine code, amongst others.
