Enterprise Rivals Red Hat and Oracle Come Together on CAMP Standard

Oracle TrainingThe New Conversion will make Oracle Training Courses More Streamlined and User Friendly

Red Hat and Oracle have always competed fiercely on enterprise software domain of the IT world. But there has not been much development on the recent PaaS services and this has resulted in an association between the two rivals. Oracle and Red Hat have combined forces with a few other companies that specialize in providing online service and software to develop a new means by which they can ease the usage of platform as a service (PaaS) amongst its customers.

If you are taking Oracle training courses, you would be aware of this problem while using cloud services. This announcement comes behind the news that the companies will be employing the CAMP standard to provide the required solutions. CAMP has a reputation of allowing  its users to manage the workloads more easily than any other platform, especially their PaaS workloads.

Help Customers Manage Their Workloads Across Different Platforms

Jeff Mischkinsky, the senior director who Oracle has appointed for their Fusion middleware project, said that this association is aimed at increasing the convenience of the users. He said that the product developed or optimized by this association will help the customers to manage their workloads across various platforms. The group of companies includes Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards, popularly known as OASIS, Huawei, Software AG, CloudSoft, CloudBees and Rackspace.

It should also be noted that OASIS has the reputation of being the organization  responsible for wide array of revolutionary web services that have come up over the past decade. If you are enrolled in Oracle courses, you can try developing an API like this that will help in cross platform migration for a mini project of your own, that could land you in a job in one of the reputed firms of the IT world.

The Effort Will be The First of Its Kind

As far as development of the new platform or the optimization of the existing technology goes, this is the first time that so many companies have come together to  solve a single problem and find a solution that will revolutionize the way workloads are managed in the future. Recent reports suggests that the consortium will try to develop a standard for the PaaS commands, which has become one of the most widely used services in the modern world. Although not very well known, many companies have started making use of the PaaS services and over the years, and the numbers are only increasing.

MS Azure and Elastic Cloud Compute (EC2) Employ PaaS Services

Red Hat Oracle CAMPThe latest examples of cloud platforms that employ the PaaS services are the extremely popular Microsoft Azure and the Elastic Cloud Compute, also known as EC2. But there is a problem for the customers who are making use of these services. Azure and EC2 have their own, custom designed console that they offer to their users. These consoles are not designed  to help the customers migrate or switch from one platform to another with minimal effort. Although the difference in platforms is understandable to establish exclusivity, it is not serving the purpose of the customers, which has necessitated this alliance. If we look back, the only attempt to make standard PaaS calls has been a service called Eucalyptus. This is an open source platform and employs the API from Amazon for making its calls.

CAMP Standard Proposed by OASIS

A new standard that has been proposed by the consortium of companies and also approved by OASIS is called as CAMP. It is an acronym for Cloud Application Management for Platforms and as the name suggests, the association is developing a new API that can be used as a standard by all PaaS services users. This Application Programming Interface will make use of a set of commands that is common for all the PaaS services.

Another advantage that you will have while using CAMP, is that you will have a set of specs that will help you in managing and packaging the workload. This is great news for people who are enrolled in or planning to enroll in Oracle courses as the requirement for people who have knowledge about Oracle Enterprise tools will be very high and you might find yourself employed if you acquire the right skills.

A Minor Roadblock

One of the biggest roadblocks this particular API has is with the PaaS providers themselves. For this API to work properly, the service provider should recognize the commands given by this API as its own and execute them. Although this might seem like a trivial issue, PaaS service providers might take it as an attempt to generalize their services and may object to it. The project will succeed only of PaaS service provides agree to this API and make a few  modifications of their own.

  1. I am happy to hear that there is now a common platform so that those considering an Oracle training course can now do so with more confidence. I can’t tell you how many times I have felt unsure and hesitated learning a certain language because I feared that it would become obsolete or that it would be unusable in a real world scenario. We don’t have to worry about the later with Oracle.

  2. In Oracle Database 11g, Oracle introduced a new features called Database Smart Flash Cache. The feature leverages any flash storage (aka Solid State Drives (SSDs) or Enterprise Flash Drives (EFDs)) on the system to act a second level cache behind RAM, Sounds great right? Here’s the thing: It’s only available on Oracle Solaris or Oracle Linux. So I’m guessing this common platform fixes this, no?

  3. I hear that Red Hat has changed the way it distributes Enterprise Linux kernel code in an effort to prevent Oracle and Novell from stealing its customers, making it more difficult for these competitors to understand which patches have been applied where. Some have speculated that the change is designed to make it harder for Oracle as well as the open source CentOS project to build their own Linux distributions.

  4. I am a bit shocked by what I’m seeing. Oracle, longtime partner to Red Hat, is rolling out the next phase of its Unbreakable Linux program, designed to kill Red Hat and Novell (whatever Larry Ellison might say to the contrary). With partners like Oracle, who needs competitors? Maybe this is why Oracle has been aggressively recruiting kernel developers out of Novell. Novell has lost three in the last several months.

  5. I don’t quite know how this conversion will make Oracle Training Courses More Streamlined and User Friendly, but it certainly gives me more confidence in learning Oracle. Just knowing that the industry considers this move to be advantageous to developers and the end users makes me want to really consider learning Oracle.

  6. This is great news for me. I manage a Red Hat Network (RHN) Satellite Server in our lab for our Red Had Enterprise Linux (RHEL) hosts, and throughout the years I’ve gathered a few tips and hints that have made my life easier. Some of these tips can probably be found in the official Red Hat documentation already, others are not as obvious as you would think.

  7. In essence, Red Hat is trying to hide information from these competitors that is essential to providing support for RHEL specifically. What they are trying to impede is competitors that come to customers who are already running RHEL under subscription from Red Hat and saying ‘Don’t pay Red Hat anymore, pay us, and don’t make any changes to your systems’.

  8. I guess you could say that the cold war is coming to an end between these two platforms. I can only wish at this point, that I was versed enough in this programming language to know about this limitation in compatibility. So maybe I should get off the fence and start a training course in one of these programming languages.

  9. Not all is clicking for Red Hat Linux. I found it interesting that Nokias MeeGo team walked away from the company. Most of the Nokia team have gone into business for themselves, creating a company called Jolla Ltd. to continue developing MeeGo powered devices. I mention this because MeeGo project provides a Linux-based, software for the next devices. The MeeGo project is hosted by Linux, but it was canceled in September 2011, in favor of Tizen.
