Oracle has been one of the leading service providers in the market for IT infrastructure and business intelligence. The fact was highlighted yet again, and this time it was by Better Life Commercial Chain Co, a hypermarket chain in China. The company has identified Oracle as one of the leading providers of applications and solutions for businesses around the world and employed its services to help the growth of its hypermarket chain.
Better life was one of the earliest multi-format store providers of China and today, they have a huge chain of hypermarkets. They run close to 190 hypermarkets, consumer electronic stores and departmental stores, with real estate and entertainment businesses in the southern part of China.
Hypermarket business is extremely competitive and businesses are making use of the latest tools to ensure that they are not left behind. Better Life also wanted to keep in touch with the pack leaders and decided that Oracle’s host of services is their best bet. These services include Oracle In-Store Retail Operations, Oracle’s Retail Merchandise Planning and Optimizing Tool and Oracle’s Operations Management tool to keep track of its day to day affairs.
Along with this, Better Life is also planning to use the E-Business Suite, JD Edwards EnterpriseOne, Hyperion Planning, and the Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition (OBIEE). This is the first time a Hypermarket chain in China is making use of a host of tools along with Business Intelligence for its operations.
If the trend is anything to go by, business intelligence has been, and will be used by similar establishments in the near future. If you have enrolled in Oracle or OBIEE training courses, you might find a bunch of job opportunities waiting for you at businesses similar to Better Life, or even better ones.

I have been considering taking a course in Oracle or Java. I haven’t made any commitments yet because I don’t know which of these certifications is in more demand on the job market. This article provides a clue, but I suppose I still need to do more research into the job market. The last thing I want to do is invest in a degree and then not be able to find a job.

I just graduated from the University of Colorado with a bachelors degree in business administration, concentration in Information Systems. I have zero experience, and I’m getting entry-level job offers with a salary range of $30,000 to $40,000. Is this a normal starting salary? What are the typical salaries for Oracle DBA? How does an Oracle professionals salary vary by degree and experience?

This store chain isn’t the only one going Oracle. I read today that a development company successfully closed on a quarter million dollar Oracle Essbase upgrade and Hyperion Planning implementation project. The client is a west coast-based supermarket chain who operates 226 stores throughout Northern California and Northern Nevada. Backed by a team of experienced and certified consultants, Oracle solutions combine best practices with robust product experience into one streamlined and proven solution.

That’s a good story. Here is a darker one: Oracle released a rare out-of-band patch to fix zero-day vulnerabilities in Java 7 that are being exploited by an attacker group based in China that last year targeted the chemical industry and some defense contractors. After the flaw became known, some security experts had advised users to just turn off Java, which runs on billions of computers. Ironically, Oracle has rarely issued emergency patches.

It is apparent to me that to remain agile in today’s volatile markets, organizations must find a better way to manage mission-critical management processes than spreadsheets and point solutions. Oracle’s market-leading performance management applications enable organizations to achieve Business Excellence by integrating strategy, planning, and execution across management and operational systems. That is why I am leaning toward taking a training course in Oracle instead of app development languages.

For the average American, there is no greater example of a hyper market chain than the good ole Super Walmart. I think just about everyone has a super Walmart in their local area. Even rural residents in North Florida (Punta Gorda and surrounding areas) have this famous hyper market chain within driving distance. I wonder if they use Oracle services.

Another good example of this is how the struggling Book retailer Barnes & Noble partnered with UK-based Dixons Retail, Sainsbury’s and supermarket chain Waitrose to further its recently announced UK expansion. The book retailer looks forward to bringing their highly sought-after line of NOOK reading devices and content to PC World and Currys customers this autumn. They are finally looking to operate as a hyper market in order to survive.

I wonder if an Arab Foundation I heard about will be using Oracle to distribute the Meer Ramadan this year by magnetic smart cards. The Foundation is the first and the only establishment on the state level to implement Meer Ramadan projects this way which ensures value and positive rewards for the beneficiaries. that the project is of great importance to the Foundation as it cooperates with its partners in charity within the UAE for the distribution of the smart cards.

By definition a hypermarket is the combination of a supermarket and a department store which has at least 150,000 square feet of floor space, and at least 35% of that space is used for the sale of nonfood merchandise. What I am not clear on is whether a store needs to sell everything (like a super Walmart) in order to be classified as a hypermarket chain. Or is it just based on size?
