Oracle issues their patch updates quarterly, and the January update has been released. A Critical Patch Update is a collection of patches for multiple security vulnerabilities. There are 78 updates this quarter that affect various database products including Oracle Database Server, Fusion Middleware, E-Business Suite, Oracle Sun products, MySQL, VirtualBox, and PeopleSoft. Oracle is advising its customers to apply the fixes as soon as possible since the workaround would be more even more work and strongly recommends that customers apply CPU fixes as soon as possible.
Qualys Chief Technology Office Wolfgang Kandek recommends addressing vulnerabilities on systems that are internet accessible first by fixing Weblogic/Apache and Solaris vulnerabilities first, followed by MySQL. Oracle RDMBS can probably be addressed last as these systems tend to be installed in internal networks or well firewalled if they are connected to the internet at all.
Critical Patch Updates are released on the Tuesday closest to the 17th day of January, April, July and October. The next four dates are April 17th, July 1th, October 16th and January 15, 2013.
