Smartphones are rapidly overtaking lower end point and shoot cameras. The images on smart phones are catching up in quality, if they are 3-megapixel shooters, to lower end phones, so consumers do not feel a need to purchase both items. According to NPD’s Retail Tracking Service, the point and shoot camera market fell 17 percent in units and 18 percent in dollars in 2011.
The reason for the drop in sales on lower end cameras are that consumers find it easier to document moments of life using their cell phone, as people normally keep their phones with them at all times. Spur of the moment pictures are captured without having to carry around their camera.
However, for more planned events, higher end cameras are still preferred for better images. Sales of cameras with a detachable lens rose, which range in price from about $700 – 900.00, 12 percent in units and 11 percent in dollars during the same 11-month period.
Smartphones are also an easier way to share photo’s with family and friends for the same reason they are more convenient to take the pictures. Consumers can share photo’s at any moment.
